J. Cole shows love to Eminem & Royce 5’9″ in the new interview with Nardwuar

Finally, Nardwuar landed his J. Cole interview. The interview with Dreamville head honcho has been at least a couple years in the making.

In almost 1 hour long interview, J. Cole briefly talked about getting inspired by Canibus, Eminem, Royce 5’9″ and Big L.

“Canibus was huge inspiration on my teenage years of rapping. Just ferocious, barred up, lyrical, punch lines, any cypher, any gathering of three or more people that wanted to rap, destroying it. That was my whole mo, my forte and Canibus was big part of that. Eminem was big part of that. Royce 5’9″ as big part of that, Big L was big part of that.” – said Cole.

At one point during the interview (After 43 minutes), J. Cole confirmed that he told Dr. Dre about Kendrick Lamar: “Who told you that? Who gave you that piece of information? The answer is yes, I did. I’m not gonna say I was the first to tell him but when Dre was working on Detox album, yes, I was like ‘you gotta sign this kid from Compton. Shout out to Dr. Dre, he made right decision.”

Riggs Morales says J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar & Kid Cudi were considered to sign to Eminem’s Shady Records

Last year on A Waste of Time podcast with ItsTheReal, former Shady Records and current Atlantic Records VP of A&R and Artist Development Riggs Morales discussed choosing David Banner, Juelz Santana and most famously, Eminem, for the Unsigned Hype column. Riggs also reminisced on his time as an A&R for Shady Records during their dominant years, putting together the 8 Mile soundtrack with Slim Shady and seeing what a genius mind 50 Cent is from the moment he signed.

During the podcast, Morales revealed that Pitbull, Dead Prez, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Kid Cudi and Juelz Santana were all considered to be signed to Eminem’s Shady Records label.

“Oh man…There are ones that we had an opportunity to and there are ones to go after like, I wanted so bad. Pitbull, he came by, he played me his demo and I told him this is cool…Over the years, I tried my best to sign Dead Prez, I have gotten into the preview of what their next album would sound like and three of the cuts were produced by Kanye. When I say I wanted to cause I was engaged.”

“Towards later years before I left Shady, J. Cole came across the desk, Kendrick Lamar but that’s more of a Paul story and I believe Paul was the one who suggested Kendrick to Dr. Dre when Dre was looking for someone to write for his Detox album. I tried very hard to get Clipse and I did want them to split them up. Who else? Kid Cudi. He played me Day N Night and it was f**king awesome and we tried something to work but as soon as Kanye put his hands around…And I get it. I really thought he would be one that we could have been involved because when I was at Shady I was looking the ways as an AR how we gonna be involved with changing the time. We were smacked into that Kanye era.”

J. Cole references Eminem on a new song from “The Off-Season” album

After three years, J. Cole has returned to deliver his sixth solo studio album, titled The Off-Season. The album features guest appearances from Lil Baby, 21 Savage, and more.

On the song titled “a p p l y i n g . p r e s s u r e,” Cole references Eminem with the following lines: “Just did the mental math and calculated my worth / S**t crazy, didn’t know I got more M’s than a Real Slim Shady video…

This is a play on the name of Eminem and his alter ego named Slim Shady. Eminem’s shortened moniker, “Em”, is homonymous with the letter “M”, an abbreviation for million. Em’s lead single from the MMLP, The Real Slim Shady has a music video in which the are multiple Slim Shadies being manufactured throughout the video.

J. Cole had a similar line on “KOD” in 2018, where he raps: “Bi**hes been askin’, “What have you done lately? I stacked a few M’s like my last name was Shady.

Eminem shouts out J. Cole and Lil Wayne on a new song “Favorite B**ch,” ft. Ty Dolla $ign

Yesterday, Eminem dropped the deluxe edition of Music To Be Murdered By: Side B and the album includes a song “Favorite B**ch,” featuring Ty Dolla $ign, produced by Eminem, MjNichols and Blacknailz.

In the song, Eminem gives super shout out to J. Cole and Lil Wayne:

As the era whence we came
From Nas to Pac, Rak’, Eric B. and Kane,
But I know a few from this era that are lyrically insane,
And although most are never gonna hit the level Cole or Weezy at

Eminem does not think that the level of J. Cole or Lil Wayne is easily reachable since the new generation have chosen a different direction, and the rap-mentality of Cole or Weezy are totally different from what it is nowadays.

Today, 6 years ago, J. Cole dropped “Fire Squad,” name-dropping Eminem

On this day, 6 years ago, December 9th, 2014, J. Cole dropped 2014 Forest Hills Drive album and the song “Fire Squad,” which is produced by himself, had come with it.

In the song, J. Cole attempts to restore the balance in Hip Hop as he criticizes white privilege and white appropriation of Hip Hop culture. For example, Macklemore’s The Heist album winning the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album over nominees like Kendrick Lamar’s good kid m.A.A.d city, Drake’s Nothing Was The Same, Kanye West’s Yeezus, and Jay Z’s Magna Carta… Holy Grail, as well as Iggy Azalea winning other awards at MTV and Billboard.

Cole also name-drops Eminem in the following lines:

Listen…
History repeats itself and that’s just how it goes
Same way that these rappers always bite each others flows
Same thing that my ni**a Elvis did with Rock n Roll
Justin Timberlake, Eminem and then Macklemore…
While silly ni**as argue over who gon’ snatch the crown
Look around, my ni**a, white people have snatched the sound

Cole is saying that artists like Justin Timberlake and Eminem have found success in performing music that is owned by Blacks, outselling their black contemporaries. Eminem has even admitted this way back in 2002 on a song “White America.”

Lots of people, including Kxng Crooked and Trick Trick took these lines as an insult to Eminem. Trick even threatened to keep Cole out of Detroit: “He ain’t poppin’ “S**t S**t” is he??? I will lock the gate on that ni**a. He gon’ build himself an ass whipin’” – Trick Trick commented on Marv Won’s Facebook post, who took Eminem’s side as well.

Few days later, in an interview with Power 105.1 FM’s Angie Martinez, J. Cole explained that this line was not meant as a dig at Eminem:

“People gotta know, Its silly how big of an Eminem fan I am. When I had the song ‘Let Nas Down’ and I had the raps hanging up on my wall, he wasn’t the only one. It was a very select, top notch people that I worshiped and Eminem was literally at the top of that list. My first song was literally an Eminem bite. If you thinking I’m dissing Eminem, than I know you just read the headline, or you’re listening to the song with the headline in mind.” says Cole
