Dr. Dre Confirms He’s Now Using AI While Producing

Legendary music producers Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre view artificial intelligence not as an existential threat to the music industry, but as the next natural evolution of creative tools. Drawing from their history of navigating past industry shifts, they argue that technological advancements ultimately enhance art rather than destroy it. As Iovine put it, “I’m very pro-A.I. in music creation. I don’t see the downside at all.”

Addressing the widespread anxiety surrounding generative tools, Iovine attributes much of the backlash to how tech companies communicate rather than the technology itself, claiming they have “terrible communication skills.” He notes that while low-quality artificial tracks will flood the market, low-quality art has always been present. Instead, he believes that “in the studio, when gifted people have A.I., they’re going to make better records.”

Dr. Dre pushed back even harder against fears of artist displacement, stating, “I think the only people that see it as a threat are the people who have trouble creating.” He drew a direct parallel between AI and past technical innovations that sparked similar panics, pointing out that critics sound like “the person that would have been against the drum machine when it came out” or synthesizers.

Rather than viewing artificial intelligence as a substitute for human talent, both pioneers treat it as a fresh instrument for genuine creators. Confirming that he already uses AI in his own studio workflow “as a tool to see what it would do with what I just did,” Dre remains eager to explore its potential, noting that “some people are afraid of learning new things,” but he is embracing the shift.
