How Dr. Dre and Mike Elizondo’s Weird Beats Inspired Eminem’s Iconic Sound

In a new interview on Rick Beato’s channel, renowned musician and producer Mike Elizondo shared the story behind creating Eminem’s classic hit, “The Real Slim Shady. The Marshall Mathers LP was already finished and mixed when Interscope head Jimmy Iovine gave the team an extra window of time. Iovine walked into the studio and told them, “Let’s give it two more weeks and see if you beat anything up,” which accidentally granted them the freedom to innovate.

Elizondo explained that Dr. Dre’s production style relied heavily on live studio chemistry rather than pre-planned digital arrangements. Dre would typically start a session with a simple drum beat, utilizing just kicks on the first and third beats and snares on the second and fourth. This minimalist foundation allowed musicians in the room to hunt for unexpected ideas. During this specific session, keyboard player Tommy Coster Jr. began playing a baroque-style harpsichord melody on his Korg keyboard, and Elizondo immediately responded by locking in a complementary bassline.

The instrumental clash provided a classical counterpoint that Elizondo described as being “almost like Bach”. This blend of distinct musical worlds was exactly the kind of boundary-pushing experiment that thrived under Dre’s guidance. “I loved trying to find musical places that had no relationship to hip hop,” Elizondo noted, adding that “Dre always seemed to respond to that. Marshall did too.”

While Eminem famously kept extensive notebooks packed with pre-written rhymes, the unique instrumentation of the new track altered his usual writing process. Instead of pulling old lines from his journals, the instrumental arrangement immediately sparked a completely fresh concept for the Detroit icon. Once they committed the basic musical elements to tape, Eminem constructed the lyrics from scratch. As Elizondo recalled, “This was something that he just had a vision for, and the whole Real Slim Shady thing came out of that.”
