One of the Hollywood’s power players, Anthony Mackie, whose latest film, Outside the Wire, is currently trending on Netflix, has recently visited Hot Ones on First We Feast where the host asked the actor how did he prepare for a Papa Doc role in Eminem’s 8 Mile movie, on which he replied:
“You know what’s interesting? I find myself very lucky to have studied Shakespeare. When you look at Shakespeare, the way he wrote, he wrote in verse. So the idea of approaching a rapper from the perspective of an actor, you are really just speaking in poems. I always said, one of the greatest rappers that ever lived was William Shakespeare. So It helped a lot as far as being able to understand the cadence, the verse, the meter and putting those words in rhyming couplets and into form.”
On Rich Eisen Show, Actor Anthony Mackie reveals a never before told story about ‘8 Mile’ final battle, B-Rabbit (Eminem) against Papa Doc.
“One day we sit on a set and Eminem comes over and he’s like ‘what’s up man, I was reading a script and there is no reason for me not to like you, you are cool dude, I like you’ and then I said ‘I like you too.’ And then he was like ‘So you don’t mind if I add some stuff about you? I’m like sure go ahead. So before the entire 8 Mile final battle, he googles about me and learns about me and he basically makes fun of me as Papa Doc. [Laughs] And then I’m like ‘you getting little personal Mr. Marshall… I didn’t really go Cranbrook, but I did go at private school [laughs].” said Anthony Mackie
At the end of the video, one of the hosts also reveal a story about Brittany Murphy: “I was friends with the late Brittany Murphy and one time she told me a story that she had no idea how to throw up a middle finger cause she never flipped anyone off in her entire life until she did 8 Mile with Marshall. Eminem and her sit down and was teaching her how to do it. And if you watch the movie, he has a weird way of flipping people off. And if you look, she does the exact same way he does.”
And the hosts finally decided to re-watch 8 Mile movie again. Watch the full thing below:
8 Mile is a 2002 American hip-hop drama film directed by Curtis Hanson and written by Scott Silver. It stars Eminem in his film debut, alongside Mekhi Phifer, Brittany Murphy, Kim Basinger, Anthony Mackie and Michael Shannon. The film, which contains autobiographical elements from Eminem’s life, tells a story of a white rapper B-Rabbit (Eminem) and his attempt to launch a career in rap/hip-hop, a music genre dominated by African-Americans.
Get Rich or Die Tryin’ is a 2005 American hip-hop crime drama film, starring Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson in his feature film acting debut. Similar to Eminem’s movie 8 Mile, which it used as a template, the film is based on 50 Cent‘s own life and was directed by Jim Sheridan. The name of the film is shared with 50 Cent’s debut album of the same name.
Now lets compare those two movies in numbers. Let’s start with 8 Mile.
Earlier this year, Eminem and late rapper Juice WRLD teamed up for the first time on “Godzilla,” from the Music To Be Murdered album.
The official music video dropped March 9, 2020. Directed by Cole Bennett, one of the biggest names in music video production in recent year. The clip is starring Dr. Dre, legendary boxer Mike Tyson, actor George Todd McLachlan who portrays young Eminem and actress Anna Dahl.
Few minutes ago, Cole Bennett posted a picture him heading to 8 Mile, Detroit. Are Cole and Eminem teaming up again? Check out the post below:
Lyrically deadly member of the Fat Killahz, Marv Won, has recently appeared on Math Hoffa’s My Expert Opinion podcast where he discussed his battle with Eminem while shooting 8 Mile movie. The battle eventually ended up as a bonus battle in the 8 Mile DVD disk.
As soon as Marv Won says “Everybody that was an extra in that movie was a rapper in the city of Detroit,” Quest Mcody interferes who adds: “People who say that Eminem do not do s**t or has not done s**t for the city outside of the philanthropy that is not promoted, I know for a fact that as a teenager I got paid a lot of money per hour to do absolutely nothing but stand around and meet some of the greatest rappers in the world.”
Marv continues: “At that point, we were rowdy. What the director decided, was he was going to do a contest. It was like we gonna pick three people to come up here and pantomime scenes. Eminem was going to rap, and it was going to be some b-roll. I was not going to rap. I was feeling myself. Like naah, I am bigger than this. And then I got a call from my manager. HE was like ‘NI**A, YOU GOING TO DO THAT S**T.’ So I did it. and I was one of the ni**as that made it to the finals.
“So they bring Eminem in, and they like alright, just spit a verse. I went second. It got more of a reaction than he wanted. What people do not know is he was rapping when the beat came on, but the mic was off. His voice was mastered. So the beat dropped, and he is rapping but nobody hears it. And I am trying not to break character, like “for real?” And I’ll never forget, he’s flipping his mic, and he’s like I got something for your fat a**, Marv. And he raps, and I’m like you can’t let me have this moment? like what the f**k?”
“He raps, I beat him [LAUGHS]. Nahh, that is my man. But what I’ll say, is that s**t literally changed my life. Not even on a money standpoint, but the fact that when that DVD dropped, they used that scene to sell DVDs. Up until that point, my mother thought I was f**kng wasting my time. Honestly, I had been all these places but it did not resonate. Until she is looking at Entertainment Tonight and they are playing the scene and she’s like, good luck with your career Marv Won. And this is huge. A kid from the hood to be recognized for that and for them to make decision to use me in that instance I’m forever indebted, nobody can say anything bad about that man to me. That’s my actual man.”
“I was at the party and Eminem was there and he’s shaking everybody’s hand but he did not shake my hand. I’m like, the f**k is this about. And he’s like nah, I wanna rematch. I said you are winning in life man! YOU WON! I’m f**ked up. I have not had my haircut for months!”
On this day, 18 years ago, Eminem dropped 8 Miles OST which featured career defining tunes like “Lose Yourself,” “8 Mile,” “Lose Yourself,” D12’s “Rap Game,” 50 Cent’s “Places To Go” and more.
The album earned Eminem number one movie in the country, number one album in the country, number one single in the country, Diamond certified single, Academy Award, Grammy Award and critical acclaim.
Legendary producer, DJ Premier, who is one of the contributors in the album, took a moment to reflect on the album’s 18 years anniversary on Instagram. Preemo posted the cover of the album with the caption that reads:
“18 years ago, October 29, 2002. Eminem dropped the soundtrack to his debut film ‘8 Mile.’ Thanks for having us create and original Gangstarr song “Battle.” Rest in peace GURU.”
Considering how close Eminem and Preemo got together, it’s unbelievable that they have never collaborated on a track, especially when Royce Da 5’9″ has done two full project with Premier.
