Fox 2 Detroit Drops Documentary About Proof Posted on April 17, 2026 By Remy Gelenidze For many, the name DeShaun “Proof” Holton is inseparable from Detroit hip-hop—a founding member of D12, a mentor, and a driving force behind the movement that carried the city’s sound to a global audience. But those who knew him best say his true impact went far beyond music. They remember a man who brought people together and built lasting connections.Twenty years after his passing, FOX 2’s Josh Landon revisits Proof’s life, legacy, and influence through the voices of family, friends, and fellow artists who experienced it firsthand. From Detroit’s underground battle rap circuit at the Hip Hop Shop to performing on international stages alongside Eminem, Proof played a key role in shaping a generation. Many described him as the “glue” of the scene—someone who unified different corners of Detroit’s hip-hop culture and created opportunities for others. “Proof was the glue that held it all together,” said longtime friend Andre “DrunkenMaster” Harris. His influence also extended deeply into his personal life. Family members describe a devoted father, son, and friend whose presence is still felt today. “It’s been a journey,” said his son, DeShaun Rice. “Just missing him… wishing he was here to see my kids.”On April 11, 2006, Proof was fatally shot at an after-hours nightclub on Detroit’s east side. The incident, which also resulted in the death of Keith Bender, remains one of the city’s most painful chapters. “Two people are gone… over something that didn’t have to happen,” one community member reflected. Through exclusive interviews and archival footage, the special explores not only how Proof lived, but what his story continues to teach about violence, accountability, and community. Interviewees also include former D12 manager, Mark Hicks. As Detroit continues to grow and evolve, many believe his legacy remains deeply woven into its culture—not just through music, but through the relationships he built and the doors he opened. “Human connections,” said Denaun Porter. “That’s what he was about.” You can watch the documentary below: RECENT RELATED ARTICLESEminem Honors Proof on the 20th Anniversary of His PassingApril 11, 2026Eminem & Proof rare interviewFebruary 26, 2026New Song: Gorillaz – “The Manifesto,” ft.
