New Eminem Interview on Shade 45

During a new interview with D-Stroy on SiriusXM’s Shade 45 (Ch. 45), Eminem reflected on the musicians who helped shape his approach to hip-hop. The conversation is part of the “Back to School (Da Ol’ Skool Way)” special, which airs Friday, September 4, at 7 p.m. ET on Shade 45, with additional replays throughout the weekend.

Among his earliest inspirations was LL COOL J. Eminem recalled that LL COOL J’s 1985 album, “Radio”, was the first full rap cassette he owned, and said he played it constantly as a kid. “He was what made me want to rap in the first place,” Eminem said. He also remembered writing one of his first rap verses after hearing LL COOL J’s “B.A.D.”, admitting that his early attempt closely mirrored the song. His verse, he recalled, “sounded just like” the track.

Eminem also highlighted Rakim as another major influence, particularly crediting the legendary rapper for teaching him the possibilities of multisyllabic rhyme patterns. His development also came through years spent in Detroit’s underground rap scene, where he sharpened his skills and learned alongside other local artists.

But after the release of The Slim Shady LP, Eminem found himself on the other side of the influence equation. He began noticing younger rappers incorporating elements of his own style into their music — something that caught him completely off guard. “I didn’t realize ’til the first album dropped that now rappers are starting to sound like me,” he said. “Pretty f***ing wild.”
