The Detroit Lions stood in stunned silence after a chaotic finish against the Steelers left them with another painful loss and their playoff hopes hanging by a thread. Players remained on the field in disbelief as a wild final minute unraveled. Isaac TeSlaa stared motionless at the scoreboard, while Jameson Williams watched a replay, threw his hands up in frustration, then received a hug from mascot Roary before heading to the locker room. Jared Goff questioned officials about why the Lions weren’t allowed one final play after a potential game-tying touchdown — a lateral from Amon-Ra St. Brown — was erased by an offensive pass interference penalty as time expired. “I don’t even want to get into it,” coach Dan Campbell said. “Because it’s not going to change anything, we still lost. I mean, look, you think you score, you don’t score. And then you think you’re going to have another play, replay it or back it up, one more shot, and it doesn’t. And that’s just, I guess that’s the way it’s written in the rulebook. So that’s frustrating. But there again, it should never come to that. We had our opportunities. We weren’t able to put it in before that play.” Detroit turned in one of its least inspiring performances of the season Sunday, Dec. 21. The Lions rushed for just 15 yards, allowed multiple explosive plays, and fell to 8-7 — putting them on the brink of playoff elimination one year after a franchise-record 15-win season.
