Eminem’s “Tobey” debuts on Billboard Hot 100

On Monday (July 8, 2024), Eminem dropped the much anticipated visuals for his song “Tobey,” which features verses from Detroit natives Big Sean and BabyTron. In the video below, directed by Cole Bennett, the three rappers can be seen delivering their respective rhymes while in various locations including a warehouse and a spaceship.

In one scene, BabyTron and Slim Shady can be seen hanging around what seems to be Eminem’s childhood home at 19946 Dresden St. in Detroit. It’s the same house on the cover of Em’s The Marshall Mathers LP—in the same brown patina, too. BabyTron raps about his certified G.O.A.T. status while walking around Em’s old residence. After the camera pans to Shady, he begins to rap about his humble beginnings, his mission to inspire the youth and much more while sitting on the porch of the home.

“Tobey Maguire got bit by a spider, but see, me, it was a goat/If you want space, I hope you take your helmet off soon as you get up to Venus and choke,” they rap on the chorus. “Even while sleepin’, be thinkin’ so woke/White Cartiers, all I’m seein’ is dope (Yeah)/My city Leia and I’m Obi-Wan, got a mission to pass, I just might be the hope.”

At the end, Em, donning a Jason mask, chainsaws someone off camera making a bloody mess. The camera then pulls back to reveal a chalk outline of a person (possibly of Slim Shady) who has left hand cut off but still showing middle finger. The “Tobey” music video was supposed to debut via YouTube on July 5 but was postponed to drop Yesterday.

The single itself was released on July 2 (Tuesday). Even though it had only 2.5 days to enter the charts, the song managed to debut inside Billboard Hot 100, at No. 95, making it the first ever entry for BabyTron on the prestigious charts.

Today in 2010, Eminem’s “Recovery” debuted at No. 1 on Billboard 200

On this day, exactly 13 years ago (July 11, 2010), Eminem’s “Recovery” album debuted at No. on the US Billboard 200 charts with first-week sales of 741,000 copies. It became Eminem’s sixth album to debut at No. 1 in the United States.

In its second week of release it remained at number-one and sold 313,000 copies. It also entered at number one on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Rap Albums chart. In its ninth week of release the album remained at number one for its seventh non-consecutive week.

Recovery debuted at No. 1 on the United Kingdom Albums Chart, selling 140,000 copies in its first week in the country. In Canada, the album sold 85,000 copies in its first week and debuted at No. 1 on Canada’s Albums Chart. The album spent six consecutive weeks at number one, and retook the top spot after one week at number two.

By the end of its release year, Recovery had sold over 5.7 million copies worldwide. It was one of the best-selling album of 2010 in the United States with 3.4 million copies, and it had sold 2.3 million copies in other territories for a total of 5.7 million copies worldwide by December 2010. According to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, it was also the best-selling album of 2010 worldwide. The album was the best-selling album in Canada in 2010 selling 435,000 copies; more than double the album in second place.

Recovery spawned four singles: “Not Afraid”, “Love the Way You Lie” with Rihanna, “No Love” with Lil Wayne, and “Space Bound”, with the former two both reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

In 2022, Recovery was certified 8x platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), becoming Eminem’s third best-selling studio album behind The Marshall Mathers LP (2000) and The Eminem Show (2002).

At the 2011 Grammy Awards, it was nominated for Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Record of the Year; the latter two were for “Love the Way You Lie”. The album earned Eminem Grammy award, American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, among other awards.

Billboard ranks G-Unit at No. 19 on “50 Greatest Rap Groups of All Time,” snubs D12

Billboard magazine has released the final top 10 in their ranking of the 50 Greatest Rap Groups of All Time.

The magazine reports: In determining these rankings, the Billboard editorial team again took the following criteria into account, not in any specific order: body of work/achievements (charted singles/albums, gold/platinum certifications, other awards), cultural impact/influence (how the group’s work fostered the genre’s evolution), longevity (years at the mic), lyrics (storytelling skills) and flow (vocal prowess). Our definition of groups includes duos, proper groups and more nebulous collectives. Most notably, Inclusion on this list is based on the accomplishments of the group as a unit — not what the individuals may have separately accomplished. We tried to walk the line between what constitutes a group versus a collective or a crew, though at times that was not entirely clear.

Tyga says Eminem & Lil Wayne are the best rappers of all time

Billboard and Vibe Magazine have recently released a list of top 50 greatest rappers of all time which sparked big debate in hip-hop world. The list saw Jay-Z at number one, Eminem at number five and Lil Wayne at number seven. It seems, Tyga disagrees the rankings of popular magazines.

Taking on Twitter (March 24, 2023), Tyga crowned Lil Wayne and Eminem as two best rappers of all time: “Lil Wayne and Eminem are the best rappers of all time! Lyrical word play, delivery, flow, pockets, originality, raw, intentional, clarity, generational influence.” – he tweeted.

This is not the first time Tyga is showing love to Eminem. Last year, during one of the episodes of GOAT Talk with Complex magazine, Compton, California-born rapper gave shout out to Slim Shady and Weezy.

GOAT Talk is a show where Complex journalists ask today’s greats rappers to crown their all-time greats. One of the questions on the card was who is the greatest rapper of all time on which Tyga replied: “I am gonna have to go with like, prime Lil Wayne and prime Eminem, for me. I think those are my two favorite rappers. For sure.”

Lil Wayne says he’s better than any other rapper Billboard listed, including Eminem

Billboard and Vibe magazines have recently unveiled an updated list of the 50 greatest rappers of all time and since then the hip-hop heads have been debating for weeks about the list that has Jay-Z at number one, Kendrick Lamar at number two, Nas and number three, Tupac at number four, Eminem at number five, Notorious B.I.G. at number six and Lil Wayne at number seven.

During an appearance on Zane Lowe’s Apple Music podcast show, Lil Wayne has entered into conversation and declared himself the greatest rapper of all time. Weezy says straight up, he is number one and even dares survey-takers to ask the emcees ranked higher than him how they feel about it. In his view, he thinks they would agree on the fact that Wayne is greater than them: “Bro, I am motherf–kin one. I mean, everybody they named, rest in peace, but they also know that I’m number one. Go ask them! Go ask them!

Lil Wayne proved himself to be one of the best rappers to ever touch the microphone but is he really on Eminem’s level? The two have jumped on a track three times: “Drop The World,” “No Love” and “Forever,” by Drake, which also featured Kanye West. During the interview on Drink Champs, Weezy talked highly about those joints and gave Eminem his flowers: “I did a bunch of joints with Em, that’s ma man. When you get on that joint with Em it’s like a championship game, and you win it, and they ask you how does it feel. I came in with my game plan and I expected my game plan to work. When you send a song to Em you attack it like that, like Nah, yo not going to do me like this. Either we going be right here level with it, and we’re going to make a beautiful, wonderful great song, but you ain’t going do me that above me. And that’s what we did. Can nobody say anybody got bodied. I just made sure that he didn’t body me, cause that boy is a monster.

Eminem earns his first ever No.1 song on Billboard’s Hot Christian Songs chart

Last month DJ Khaled released star-studded new album “God Did” which includes a song “Use This Gospel (Remix)” with Kanye West and Eminem, produced by one and only Dr. Dre. As Ye previously said, the song is his daughter’s all time favorite song.

In an interview with Lowe, Khaled revealed how the remix ended up on the album. He stated that Ye had played him Jesus Is King Part II in full a year and half prior, calling it “incredible”. Even though West and Khaled had recorded a couple of tracks for God Did, they were never finished due to the rapper’s schedule. As part of a “last minute magic gift”, Khaled asked West if he could include the remix on God Did since it perfectly fit the album’s theme. According to Khaled, West loved the idea, which he joked “You know Ye don’t love no idea”. Before confirming the inclusion, West insisted on contacting both Dr. Dre and Eminem for their approval.

Musically, the remix is a gospel track, with rock undertones. The song is reminiscent of Slim Shady’s early 2000s work, though it features heavier drums. Em performs a fast pace Christian rap verse on the remix, replacing Clipse’s appearance on the original track. His verse is succeeded by a dubstep outro, contributed by Dr. Dre.

In the song, The Detroit legend expresses uncertainty about holding on, detailing combatting addiction and temptation while he has raised his daughters. Em also compares his controversies to West’s, places his faith in “the Father”, and thanks Jesus, concluding with: “Praises to Jesus, I will always.”

The song debuted at No. 1 on US Billboard Hot Christian Songs chart, giving Eminem his first ever chart-topper in this category.

It marks Eminem’s 94th song into Billboard Hot 100. Em also has 5 No.1 hits and and 22 Top 10 hits.

By debuting the new single on Hot 100, Eminem has now charted at least one song for 14 consecutive years on the Billboard Hot 100 (2009-2022).

Nas, Eminem & EPMD’s “EPMD 2” debuts on Billboard Hot 100
