Slim Shady rises from the dead in Eminem’s new album trailer

Eminem’s 12th solo studio album The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce)  is just a couple of days away, and Shady has unleashed another trailer on Wednesday (July 10, 2024) teasing the new LP centered around killing off his alter ego while tapping into the viral “HAWK TUAH.” trend.

The gloomy clip features Slim Shady’s tombstone on a rainy night. The gravestone is inscribed with “Beloved Antagonist Slim Shady 1997-2024 It Feels So Empty Without Him” in an homage to lyrics from his 2002 hit “Without Me.” A person walking by the tombstone hawks a loogie on the tombstone. Then seconds later, a battered and bruised arm emerges from the dirt, signaling a possible Slim Shady revival.

“It feels so empty without him” HAWK TUAH #TheDeathOfSlimShady 7/12,” Em captioned the graveyard trailer on social media. Fans found it hilarious that the Detroit legend was plugged into the trending topic. “Eminem saying Hawk Tuah was not in my 2024 agenda,” one person tweeted. Another replied in shock, “EMINEM JUST SAID HAWK TUAH AINT NO WAY.”

For those unfamiliar, per The Cut, the now famous Hawk Tuah Girl is named Hailey Welch. She went viral in June when asked in a Nashville street0-side interview about moves that make guys “go crazy” in bed, and she replied with the intimate spitting noise. “You gotta give them that hawk tuah and spit on that thing,” Welch said. “Ya get me?” You can watch the trailer below:

Tracklist for Eminem ‘s “The Death of Slim Shady” album has been revealed

Eminem has revealed the tracklist for his highly anticipated 12th solo studio album, “The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce),” which will be released this Friday (July 12, 2024). Yesterday, the Detroit legend unveiled the cover art for the album which sees Slim Shady’s head poking out of a body bag.

Two days ahead of the album’s release on Friday, Apple Music and other streaming platforms have revealed the tracklist for the upcoming album. The tracklist includes 19 tracks with 3 skits. Notably, the album will include a sequel to “Guilty Conscience” and will presumably feature Dr. Dre after the legendary rapper and producer confirmed earlier this year that he was working with Eminem on the record. Another possibility is that it’s produced by Dr. Dre and features Ez Mil, the latest Shady Records signee.

Ahead of the new album, Em most recently released the record’s second single, ‘Tobey’, featuring Big Sean and BabyTron. It debuted at No. 95 on Billboard Hot 100 with 2 days of tracking. It follows on from ‘Houdini’, which was released on May 31 and interpolates a number of Eminem’s previous hits as well as ‘Abracadabra’ by the Steve Miller Band. The song garnered controversy as it references the shooting incident involving Megan Thee Stallion in 2020, as well as the transgender community, cancel culture, and RuPaul.

The lead single from the album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 dated June 15, becoming his highest charting hit since his No. 1 Rihanna collab “The Monster” in 2013-2014. The track is also Em’s 23rd top 10. “Houdini” pulled out an even bigger trick on the global charts, arriving at No. 1 on both the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. It’s his first chart-topper on both tallies, which kicked off in September 2020.

Eminem’s “Tobey” debuts on Billboard Hot 100

On Monday (July 8, 2024), Eminem dropped the much anticipated visuals for his song “Tobey,” which features verses from Detroit natives Big Sean and BabyTron. In the video below, directed by Cole Bennett, the three rappers can be seen delivering their respective rhymes while in various locations including a warehouse and a spaceship.

In one scene, BabyTron and Slim Shady can be seen hanging around what seems to be Eminem’s childhood home at 19946 Dresden St. in Detroit. It’s the same house on the cover of Em’s The Marshall Mathers LP—in the same brown patina, too. BabyTron raps about his certified G.O.A.T. status while walking around Em’s old residence. After the camera pans to Shady, he begins to rap about his humble beginnings, his mission to inspire the youth and much more while sitting on the porch of the home.

“Tobey Maguire got bit by a spider, but see, me, it was a goat/If you want space, I hope you take your helmet off soon as you get up to Venus and choke,” they rap on the chorus. “Even while sleepin’, be thinkin’ so woke/White Cartiers, all I’m seein’ is dope (Yeah)/My city Leia and I’m Obi-Wan, got a mission to pass, I just might be the hope.”

At the end, Em, donning a Jason mask, chainsaws someone off camera making a bloody mess. The camera then pulls back to reveal a chalk outline of a person (possibly of Slim Shady) who has left hand cut off but still showing middle finger. The “Tobey” music video was supposed to debut via YouTube on July 5 but was postponed to drop Yesterday.

The single itself was released on July 2 (Tuesday). Even though it had only 2.5 days to enter the charts, the song managed to debut inside Billboard Hot 100, at No. 95, making it the first ever entry for BabyTron on the prestigious charts.

Cole Bennett describes how hard they worked on Eminem’s “Tobey” video

Eminem has finally released the music video of “Tobey,” featuring Big Sean and BabyTron, the second single off his upcoming 12th solo studio album, “The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grace).” The director, Cole Bennett, who has previously worked with Em on several occasions, went on Instagram to share the working process of the video and a little background story about the song.

“The Tobey video is finally out this one took a lot of intense planning, patience and persistence. We shot this 6 weeks ago and began editing it right away on set and have been working on it day in and day out until literally 2 hours ago. Shot entirely on blue screen with dialed in lighting set ups and static shots. @franklinspov and I locked ourselves in the hotel conference room for 3 days leading up to the video shoot preparing every moment within the video so we could be as efficient as possible since we only had one day to shoot this video.” said Cole Bennett

Then he continued: “Explaining this video to concept to people wasn’t the easiest thing to do. As I was explaining it to Marshall he scratched his head and said “I guess I’m just going to have to trust you on this one.” I wanted to build out a video concept that felt like the video I did for “100 Bars” but something with a lot more planning and prep. I’m having fun with these stitched together one-take style videos. I want to do another one soon. The post work on this was like nothing I had ever experienced before. shout out to the VFX warriors (@the_frender , @maxcoltt , @aylo_edit , @sideeye.mov , @aid6n.edits , @ianlipton , @greyson.color , @kristaworby and many more).”

From there, Cole continued with the background story of the song: “The creation of this song itself is a whole other story… I’ll keep it short. this song has been through so many chapters. starting all the way back at the end of 2022 when I started building out this song with Tron and Daniyel.. We eventually then had Big Sean hop on it as a moment for Detroit.. I then thought about the Hail Mary idea of trying to get Eminem on it.. Bringing 3 generations of Detroit together.. So I sent it off to Paul, they both loved it and the rest was history. It’s definitely been a roller coaster of a journey.. So this one finally being released to the world feels special. There’s a lot of small Easter eggs in this video + song..

Eminem drops music video of “Tobey,” ft. Big Sean & BabyTron

Eminem recently released a new song with Big Sean and Babytron, titled “Tobey,” from his upcoming 12th solo studio album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grace).

A visual supplement for “Tobey” directed by Cole Bennett was supposed to drop on Friday (July 5, 2024). When it failed to manifest as promised, the Detroit legend took to social media that same day to share an update on the video and instead shared a snippet that alludes to the imagery of The Marshall Mathers LP from 2000.

“The Tobey video is not completed,” Em wrote. “new date Monday 7/8. Here’s a peek in the meantime!!! Sorry 4 the delay.” Now the full music video is finally out. You can watch the video below:

Royce 5’9″ on if him & Eminem siding with Kendrick Lamar in Drake beef

The Drake and Kendrick Lamar feud seemingly ended after Dreezy responded to K. Dot’s “Not Like Us” with the weak, defensive “The Heart Part 6” track and was widely declared the loser of the beef, but Kendrick has been getting more and more juice out of his Drake diss tracks, especially “Not Like Us.”

The song debuted at No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 charts, and Kendrick went on to perform it five times in a row at his Juneteenth concert “Ken & Friends = The Pop Out,” which also included the live debuts of “Euphoria” and “6:16 in LA,” a Black Hippy reunion (Kendrick, ScHoolboy Q, Jay Rock, Ab-Soul), Shady Records’ Westside Boogie and more. Now, Kendrick has released a video for “Not Like Us,” and the clip is loaded with more Drake disses and references to their beef.

In his latest post on Instagram, Royce 5’9″ shared a picture with Yahki Rapha Elohim with “Not Like Us” playing over it. Under the comment sections, one of the user commented: “So I assume Em against Drake too,” on which Royce replied: “Your assumption would be wrong… We’re not against anybody .. Proud of both sides.” Another user commented: “It ain’t worth posting the pic with the song if you finna defend yourself in the comments all day. You did this s–t on purpose my guy,” on that Royce responded with: “Defending myself? I ain’t your guy… I post what I want… When I want…” That user replied again: “you could’ve left the last response G it ain’t that deep for me. But you are defending yaself because you know you on some sucka ish. Oak Park ain’t raise you like that.” Royce hit back with: “I like Drake. Can’t stand his fans tho… All yall act like Virgos.”

Someone commented: “Royce on Kenny’s side. love to see it.” On that, the Detroit icon replied: “I’m not on anyone side..” Another said: “Someone don’t like Drake lol,” and Royce responded: ” I’m a fan of Drake bro.”

One of the users (probably a Drake fan) reminded him a Lupe Fiasco beef: “Why you ain’t play the song Lupe smashed your mic with,” he asked. Royce 5’9″ responded: “What’s it called?” He replied back: “Steve Jobs / SLR 3 … go back & listen again so you can get a reminder just how bad Lupe did you. Joe Budden reacts to Eminem’s new single “Tobey”

Eminem has recently released second single “Tobey,” featuring Big Sean and BabyTron from his upcoming 12th solo studio album “The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grace).” The Detroit legend was planning on dropping the Cole Bennett-directed video for it but ran into a delay. On Friday (July 5), he updated those awaiting its arrival with a tweet, writing, “The Tobey video is not completed- new date Monday 7/8. Here’s a peek in the meantime!!! Sorry 4 the delay.”

Eminem released the audio for “Tobey” on July 2, 2024. He revisits the 2023 controversy involving Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five member Melle Mel. “Yet here I sit on your list though at five (Hm), which still was fine/But just know inside, to me, that s–t’s hilarious, so when I (Haha)/Get dissed though and by a pioneer/Who was one of the reasons why I am here/They tell me I should just let that s–t go and slide (Why?)/’Melle Mel shouldn’t get no reply’ (Why?) ‘That man is a legend,’ b–ch, so am I (Haha, yeah).” he raps. 

The feud between Melle Mel and Eminem escalated last year, when Em responded to Melle Mel’s previous comments in which he suggested that Slim Shady’s success was largely due to his race. In a scathing verse on the track “Realest” featuring Ez Mil, Eminem addressed these claims head-on, stating that while his skin color has been a topic of discussion, it hasn’t guaranteed his success. He also took a direct jab at Melle Mel, referring to him as a “juice head” whose “brain is half destroyed” due to steroid use​.

Melle Mel didn’t take the comments lightly and fired back with his own diss track, but it was met with mixed reviews. Critics and fans alike felt that Melle Mel’s response lacked the punch and creativity needed to effectively counter Eminem’s sharp lyrics. The back-and-forth not only reignited discussions about race and recognition Hip-Hop but also highlighted the generational divide within the genre.

The song was recently discussed in the newest episode of Joe Budden podcast. “They smoked that s–t. I know its an Eminem record so most people would look at it as a necessary a sleeper but Em is slept on today. They cooked that! Couple of days ago, Tech N9ne sat down with Anthony Ray on his podcast where Kansas City, Missouri-born hip-hop legend gave high praise to Eminem, talked about meeting Slim Shady for the first time during “Anthem” video shoot, Eminem making Jason mask popular and more.

“People trying to give me stuff Jason, I’ve watched all the Friday 13th, I love it all, but Eminem is Jason. So they trying to give me Jason stuff they supposed to give it to Eminem, they give me Michael Myers stuff, Krayzie Bone is Leatherface, Bushwick Bill was Chucky. I’ve been Michael Myers for decades. Eminem has always had…even in his new song with BabyTron and Big Sean, he had f–king mask on with a chainsaw and greater said he did it first. He made it popular. I have not heard the new song yet. I’ve been in the studio trying to get as many songs I can get before I go for my wedding in Puerto Rico.” said Tech N9ne.

Then he continued: “When I did “Anthem”, it was my first time meeting a lot of people that I f–king listened to when I was coming up. I met KRS-1 that day. I met Kool G Rap that day. I met Eminem face to face that day. When I was walking in to do my part, him and his crew they all had big a-s leather jackets and they were coming out like ‘what’s up brother, how you doing.’ I’m like ‘I’m about to shoot my s–t. We are going to do it real soon bro.’ He said ‘yes we are.’ Next time I talked to him was on the phone. He was doing the bottleneck in Lawrence, Kansas. It’s a bar. I was busy doing something and Grant Rice called me and put Eminem on the phone and he said to me ‘you f–king killed it on the Anthem.’ I said ‘look who the f–king talking bro.’ It took 10 years for Speedom to happen after that.”

“Battle Eminem? We are allies man. Some people say Tech’s better than Eminem but I say Tech is different than Eminem. Eminem is f–king meticulous with the words, not saying I’m not but he’s super witty as well. When I look at a lyricist from Rakim all the way up to now, I know from Kool G Rap to Crooked I to Royce to Chino XL, Pharoahe Monch, Busta Rhymes, we pay attention to people who take it that extra mile when it comes to rhyming words, Eminem is at the top of that game. When it come to how I’ve been seeing motherf–kers work words and s–t and that’s not taking away from none of all the people, the names I named are right there with it. I’m saying I’m different than Eminem and we are allies. We are all gang-related and me and Eminem, I can’t believe I’m saying this, me and Eminem at odds could start some racial s–t. Eminem returned on Tuesday with his second single “Tobey,” featuring Big Sean and BabyTron from The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grace) album alongside fellow Detroit rappers Big Sean and BabyTron. In the song, Eminem appeared to address Billboard ranking him at No. 5 on the list of Greatest Rappers of All-Time, which was published last year.

In the song, Em raps: “Ain’t feelin’ your top five favorite rappers (Woo) / So I know they ’bout to be pissed at me (Why?) / But this, to me, is a mystery / How rappers I’ve already ripped could be (What?) / Higher up on a list than me (Ha) / Yet here I sit on your list though at five (Hm), which still was fine / But just know inside, to me, that s–t’s hilarious.”

It’s unclear who Slim Shady is targeting, but the four rappers ahead of him on the Billboard’s ranking (from four to one) are 2Pac, Nas, Kendrick Lamar and Jay-Z. Eminem collaborated with all of them but he’s definitely not talking about 2Pac for a several reasons. Eminem and Nas collaborated on “EPMD 2” and Eminem and Kendrick Lamar on “Love Game” and I think Shady did outshine them on a track but the general assumption is not what I think. As far as Jay-Z, the two collaborated on “Renegade” in the early 2000s and the general assumption is that Eminem murdered Hov in his own s–t.

Right before these lines, Em raps: “Y’all thought you were sick, you were misdiagnosed (Nope) / I’m dope and you’ll never have this high a dose (Nope, yeah) / Now my estates in the buildin’, and bitch, I done slept on more floors than the Empire State (‘Pire State) Building.” While there is literal imagery of Eminem’s home now being the Empire State Building, which is so big (and expensive) that he has bedrooms on every floor, it’s really a metaphor for his legacy being a huge part of the rap game, and the fact that this respect wasn’t just handed to him. He worked hard for it. Moreover, this is the setup to subliminal shot that comes after those lines (mentioned above) that was taken at Jay-Z who has a track called “Empire State of Mind.” Ironically, the song’s length is 4:44, which is also a title of one of JAY-Z’s studio albums.

Hip-hop fans really thought Eminem was taking shots at Jay-Z but under one of the posts on Instagram, Royce Da 5’9” responded to a fan who asked: “You not gonna answer this but they saying Em was throwing a shot at Jay in that Tobey joint. Is that true? On which Royce responded with “Of course not.”

Another said: “I did NOT expect to see Eminem throwing subliminal disses to Jay-Z in 2024, damn… Right before this bar, he started the Jay-Z scheme by referencing the song “Empire State of Mind”, and continuing with this reference of the time he out-rapped him on “Renegade.” Someone tweeted: “This whole verse really reinforces Eminem’s legacy as a competitive rapper through and through. Jay-Z could use a little inspiration to get back in the booth too!”

Eminem connects THREE different generations of rappers out of the Detroit by featuring Big Sean, BabyTron and himself on “Tobey,” produced by ​marvy ayy, John Nocito, Daniyel, Carlton McDowell, Cole Bennett and Eminem from The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grace) album, dropping on July 12, 2024.

Eminem gave fans a glimpse into the track’s horror theme with a trailer few days ago. The clip finds Em in a Jason Voorhees goalie mask revving a chainsaw and gushing blood while slicing up a body. Babytron and Big Sean watch Eminem’s gruesome butchering in tow without batting an eye.

The ticking ominous production begins and Big Sean gets off the only Spider-Man referencing bar heard in the clip. “Tobey Maguire got bit by a Spider, but me, see it was a goat,” raps Sean.

In his verse, Eminem addresses Melle Mel beef that occurred last year when the pioneer of hip-hop said that Eminem does not deserver to be be in top 5 rappers because he’s white. “When I get dissed by a pioneer / Who was one of the reasons why I’m here / They tell me I should just let that s–t go and slide / “Melle Mel shouldn’t get no reply, that man is a legend” / Bitch, so am I.”
