Devon Sawa says Macaulay Culkin was first choice for Eminem’s “Stan” video

In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Devon Sawa looks back over his career to one of the biggest projects he has ever worked on: the iconic 2000 music video for Eminem‘s “Stan,” from The Marshall Mathers LP album and reveals that the first choice for the video was “Home Alone” star Macaulay Culkin.

Vancouver, Canada-born actor has recently sat down with ET, while promoting the 3rd season of the horror TV shows “Chucky,” and he looked back at his past works as part of a career retrospective, and the cultural impact of his performance in the famous music video, playing the titular Stan.

I will never forget, they told me on the day that I was going to lip-sync it. I remember, after the first take I did, Dre running in and being like, ‘It was good, but can you try it with some rhythm this time?’ And I was like, ‘Oh my god.’ And that was kind of how the day went. But it’s such an iconic video. Dr. Dre was there, D12 was there, I think Snoop was wandering around, Cypress Hill. It was just such a wild three days of filmmaking, it was amazing.” said Devon Sawa.

Then he continued: “They went out to Macaulay Culkin first. I think that they wanted Macaulay Culkin, and he wasn’t available, or didn’t want to do it or whatever. Then Dre, who had just seen Final Destination and was a fan, suggested me. There happened to be somebody in the casting office that knew somebody who was friends with me, and they called me that way… and it ended up working out pretty good.  It’s also one of the proudest things I’ve been a part of.

It’s been nearly 25 years since the video came out, and Sawa admitted that he still knows the lyrics, and has found himself occasionally singing along. “If it came on in my car or something like that, I would jam along to it,” he said. “I’ll tell you one thing, I know it better now than I did that day. Because I’ve heard it millions of times since.

Eminem’s “Stan” hits 1 Billion streams on Spotify

Eminem’s “Stan,” featuring Dido from The Marshall Mathers LP (2000) album is now a member of Spotify’s Billions Club, having surpassed the 1 billion streams marker on the platform, making it Eminem’s ninth song to achieve the digital milestone.

“Stan” follows “Rap God,” which joined Spotify’s Billions Club back in October, 2023, as well as his songs “Mockingbird,” “Godzilla,” featuring Juice WRLD, “The Real Slim Shady,” “Love the Way You Lie,” featuring Rihanna, “Lose Yourself,” “‘Till I Collapse,” featuring Nate Dogg and “Without Me.”

“The Monster,” featuring Rihanna (932 million streams) and “Not Afraid” (925 million) are likely Eminem’s next tracks to join the Spotify’s billion club.

“Lose Yourself,” Eminem’s Oscar-winning theme from “8 Mile,” movie is his most popular song on the service, and is less than 25 million streams away from hitting the 2 billion marker.

In all, 527 songs have crossed over into Spotify’s Billions Club; Drake and Justin Bieber are tied for most songs on the list with 14 apiece, followed by Bad Bunny, Rihanna, Ariana Grande (12 each), Ed Sheeran and The Weeknd (11 each).

As mentioned above, “Stan” became Slim Shady’s ninth song to reach 1 billion. This makes it the most of any artist to debut in the 1990’s.

According to court, playing Eminem music at workplace may be considered as sexual harassment

According to the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, music that is degrading toward women played at the workplace may constitute sexual harassment.

The court ruling was in response to a lawsuit against a clothing manufacturer in which plaintiffs complained that the misogynistic music “blasted” throughout the manufacturer’s warehouse was offensive. The ruling raises questions about what music is appropriate for the workplace.

The suit alleges that S&S Activewear permitted its managers and employees to routinely play “sexually graphic, violently misogynistic” music throughout its 700,000-square-foot warehouse in Reno, Nevada. The eight plaintiffs were offended by songs that used offensive terms like “hoes” and “bi–hes” and contained themes that denigrated women.

The complaint mentions iconic song “Stan” by Eminem from his 2000 blockbuster album, The Marshall Mathers LP, which they allege, “described extreme violence against women, detailing a pregnant woman being stuffed into a car trunk and driven into water to be drowned.”

The plaintiffs also mentioned music by rapper Too $hort. Despite their frequent complaints regarding the music, the plaintiffs claim that warehouse management maintained that the songs were “motivational.”

The judge initially dismissed the case in a federal district court. However, the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco overturned that decision this month, citing other cases which found “the use of sexually degrading, gender-specific epithets, such as ‘slut,’ ‘cunt,’ ‘whore,’ and ‘b–ch,’ has been consistently held to constitute harassment based upon sex.” Eminem has countless songs that include those words.

Millyz thanks Eminem for clearing “Stan” sample for his new song

Cambridge, Massachusetts-born rapper who goes by the name Millyz says he got the “Stan” sample clearance from Eminem.

Millyz’s love of Eminem goes deeper than just sampling “Stan.” Last year, in an interview with VladTV, he said all he wants is for the legendary Detroit rapper to hear his music: “Eminem, Slim Shady, Marshall Mathers. Number one, two and three, for sure. I am a student of Em. That is one of the things in my career I am waiting on whether it comes or not. I want that co-sign. I just want to know he watches my s–t.”

On his Twitter post, British female rapper M.I.A., who has previously collaborated with J. Cole and Nicki Minaj, commented: “Se Ya!”, probably implying that she’s also featured. I guess we will find out on Friday, March 9.

Evangeline Lilly & Kathryn Newton were stunned to learn Eminem created word ‘Stan’

It’s hard to come up with something that becomes a cultural mainstay or enters into the English dictionary and Eminem did it unintentionally: His 2000 hit song “Stan,” featuring Dido, from The Marshall Mathers LP is about an obsessive fan, and it was such a popular and descriptive depiction of that sort of person that the word “stan” is now commonly used to describe passionate fans.

The word “stan” has become its own thing distinct from Eminem at this point, as Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania stars Kathryn Newton and Evangeline Lilly proved in a recent interview.

In a recent PopBuzz presser, the two were asked about the word and it turned out they had complementary sets of knowledge: Lilly hadn’t heard of the term “stan” but was aware of the Eminem song, while Newton is up on her slang but didn’t know the word’s origins.

Newton explained how the word is used, which prompted Lilly to wonder if it was the Eminem song that spawned the word: “Is it because of the Eminem song? It’s the one…[starts singing],” she said, “The verses are all about stalkery fan who’s stalking Eminem and is obsessed.” The burden of confusion shifted from Lilly to Newton at that point, who had apparently never made the connection between Eminem and the word “stan” before until after Lilly explained what the song is about.

Lupe Fiasco decodes Eminem lyrics during his lecture in MIT

Lupe Fiasco has recently shared footage of him teaching his new “Rap Theory & Practice” class at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As part of the course, which is described as “an exploration into the underlying fundamental functions, structures, and principles of rap,” Fiasco decodes and breaks down lyrics from himself, Eminem and Kendrick Lamar.

Songs that Lupe Fiasco examined during the lecture included Eminem’s  2000 hit song “Stan,” from The Marshall Mathers LP album, Kendrick Lamar’s “Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst” and his own track “Jonylah Forever,” from his 2018 release DROGAS Wave.

“Stan! Anybody not aware of Stan? Anybody not blown away with that list? Stan is probably Eminem’s greatest record. Arguably, hands down, probably Eminem’s greatest record. This song is about a fan. It’s where we get the word Stan from. The song is about a fan who writes Eminem a letter. “Dear Marshall…” and writes his first verse. Writes another letter in second verse that’s little bit more aggressive. Then he does the third verse, per say. It’s a recording. Stan recording himself, kidnapping his girlfriend and doing this wired murder suicide plot. And he’s recording this thing to Eminem and at the end of the verse he comes to realization, ‘oh s–t, how I’m gonna send this out?!’ But that’s not a plot twist. That’s great. you gotta stop there but there is fourth verse. And the twist is, Eminem finally receives the letter from the first verse and he sat down to response: ‘Dear Stan…” and at the end of the verse, Eminem has the epiphany ‘oh s–t, it was you.’ The layering and the complexity of how he worked that repetition plot break structure, it was masterful. Taking very simple concept that we all learned when we were kinds.” said Lupe Fiasco.
