Legendary EPMD’s Erick Sermon joins Ambrosia For Heads for Episode 2 of ON THE RECORD, a series where artists take a deep dive into their new music, their creative process, and the stories behind the work. In this conversation, Erick breaks down his new album Dynamic Duos, Vol. 1, explains why the project took eight years to complete, shares his top five producers, and reveals the dream posse cut he would build around Eminem.
Erick also discusses the original version of “How High,” why Redman and Method Man rejected the remix when they first heard it, and how Headbanger was originally made for Ice Cube. He speaks on his unreleased music with Dr. Dre, his sessions with Kanye West, the impact of Clipse and JAY-Z’s 4:44, and the influence of Whodini producer Larry Smith. The discussion extends into why some newer artists may struggle later in their careers, how he plans to use AI in his music through his Udio deal, and why going direct to consumer is essential for independent artists today.
“I did Eminem and Redman song on Nutty Professor 2 soundtracks but I didn’t really spend time on that. It came and people liked it. But now my mind would be different. I would want to do what Eminem said his favorite rappers was. It goes Reggie, Biggie (can’t do that though too), André 3000, Redman, Treach, Kool G Rap. These are people who he looked at. Make that type of posse record.” – said Erick Sermon.
