Daisy Edgar-Jones and Drew Starkey are set to star in STAN movie

Karyn Kusama has not directed a feature film since 2018’s Destroyer, though she nearly returned to the director’s chair in 2020 when she was attached to helm a modern-day reimagining of Dracula for Blumhouse, similar in approach to The Invisible Man. That project ultimately did not move forward.

Now, there is encouraging news for fans of Kusama’s work. The filmmaker has secured financing for her next feature, a thriller titled Stan.

The term “Stan” itself carries a powerful cultural meaning, originating from Eminem’s 2000 hit song “Stan” from The Marshall Mathers LP. The track tells the story of an obsessive fan whose admiration spirals into delusion and tragedy, and over time, the character’s name evolved into a widely used term describing an overly devoted or fixated fan. The word has since entered mainstream language and even been added to dictionaries, making it a fitting title for a film centered on fan obsession.

The independently produced film will star Daisy Edgar-Jones (Twisters) and Drew Starkey, with a screenplay by Jordan Rosenbloom. Production is scheduled to begin in June 2026 in Toronto. While specific story details remain tightly guarded, the film reportedly centers on a famous singer and a fan who becomes convinced there is a secret message hidden within her music.

Kusama is known for her compelling, female-driven films, including Girlfight, Jennifer’s Body, The Invitation, and Destroyer. Although she has been absent from feature filmmaking for several years, she has stayed active in television, serving as an executive producer on Yellowjackets and directing the first two episodes of AMC’s The Terror. Stan will mark her long-anticipated return to the big screen.
